main take aways from Halloween (1978) rewatch:

michael myers is canonically 21??? this bitch should be at the club

outside of the fact that everyone who has sex is murdered by the narrative, this is a surprisingly chill portrayal of female sexuality? these teen girls are horny and actively enjoying Getting It On with their boytoys. no pushy boyfriends sneaking in through their bedroom windows--these ladies are taking the initiative to sneak out and GET SOME. one of them gets laid and then immediately orders her boyfriend to get her a beer. (yes she gets Slashered soon afterward, but so does the boyfriend so honestly, gender equality.) yes the Final Girl is the only one not having sex, but she's not bullied for that, nor are her friends slut shamed except possibly by being murdered by the narrative

actually the only character who is shown being morally condemned on-screen is michael myers. specifically FOR his violent overreaction to other people's sex lives. (people he is spying on). metaphorically, the villain is American Puritanism sticking its judgy nose into other people's business.

but actually the real villain is the doctor. guy's a judgemental, shaming, pathologizing asshole. and he's been in charge of michael's care since he was SIX YEARS OLD? kid never had a chance. i'd go on a killing spree too

also the parents. where are the parents? it's halloween night and all the teenage girls are home babysitting their younger siblings? come to think of it, michael's first victim was his own older sister, whom he killed while she was babysitting him. teen girls are really shouldering a labour burden here. maybe parentification is the true villain

side note: mike commits his first murder wearing a clown costume...which is never referenced again? his 'iconic' costume is a generic mask and wig and jumpsuit, when we coulda had a Killer Clown Michael Myers??? travesty

i like how the Final Girl and her friend casually smoke weed in her car. yeah she's an honor student and her friend is the sheriff's daughter. yeah they smoke weed. so what it's 1978

(to reiterate, mike is 21 and should be at the club. im not saying he shouldn't be rampaging, im saying it's sad that he broke out, tasted freedom for the first time in his life, and immediately snuck back into his childhood home to go rampaging. let's have a remake where he goes to a nightclub and has a few beers. maybe some slutty dancing. then rampage)

What I liked best about Jinx and Sevika's first post-Silco talk was how well it implies why their grief is so pronounced. Every complaint the two lodged at Silco was an admission at how dependent Silco had become on them, how much he LET himself be dependent. Silco didn't NEED to let Jinx give him his eye medicine, he was perfectly capable of doing so in season one's first act. The same could be said about Sevika, because while it wasn't nearly as extreme as with Jinx, he didn't need to give her so much responsibility. Frankly it's dangerous for a kingpin to give their righthand so much power (it's supposed to be spread around), and everyone noticed, even idiots like Finn.

That's why their loss is so pronounced, in all the years they dedicated to Silco, he gave up just as much of himself to them. Silco weakened himself and trusted Sevika and Jinx to make up for it. They filled eachother out, they needed eachother, and without him there's just a hole what they all used to give eachother.

Nona as a character is so fascinating to me when you consider her as a foil to Alecto’s history. Because, when you get down to it, Alecto was Nona all those thousands of years ago.

Consider Alecto, who rose from the shattered remains of the Earth, whose body was new and massive and unwieldy, who only existed because of her creator’s cosmic overindulgence and still knew love. Love!! Knew it so well that she chose it, even to her detriment, every single time. In response, the world around her —the Lyctors especially— rejected her for it because they saw her devotion as stupidity. And Jod, who claims to love her, locked her away, entombing her because he saw his love as a weapon to be used against him. And from what we see of Alecto when she’s awake in the Locked Tomb (especially when she bites Harrow) she’s grown sharper and crueler because of these rejections.

Similarly, Nona, having been slammed into a body that was not hers, with no memory and no faculties ALSO chooses unyielding love. But where Jod and his disciples rejected such “foolishness,” Cam, Pal, Pyhrra, and Nona’s Gang all accept it with open arms. They plan a birthday party for her and make silly jokes and check in on her and always say “I love you” back. They spend every day nurturing her the best they can.

Even in Nona’s final moments, these people tell her, “we love you. We will always love and remember you. That’s what matters.” And that’s what gives Nona the strength to make it to the Body, to do an act so terrible it will erase her. She does it because she is loved.

And now Alecto lives, ancient, undying, and so unloved.

tbh I love that Sublime exists.

I'm not familiar enough with her character yet to know how much I like her herself (though I think she had a solid introduction! I like her so far!) but mostly I love the role that she is filling. I love the disability representation, I love that Adrien made a new friend that he silently goes on runs with and shares classes w that he doesn't share with Marinette, I love that Marinette has someone that she can feel threatened by in her relationship, I love seeing Marinette navigate her jealous feelings but with all the character development that came before it (she has learned that hating someone due to jealousy is bad and that she can't judge someone solely for being close to Adrien. She's doing what she wishes she'd done with Kagami to begin with — try to be her friend — but all the while she's struggling with the fact she still feels jealous, even if she won't admit it. That's good character development! Marinette can't turn off her feelings, but she can react to her feelings in different ways! That's what she's doing!). It's nice to have a "love rival" (sort of) who isn't an antagonist (like chloe and lila were) other than kagami (who is now taken and poses no threat). It's nice for Adrien to have a friend that he made on his own! She's basically re-filling the role that Kagami left behind, which is great imo, because it was an important role! Also, I'm so curious to see whatever is going on with her involvement with Tomoe. And I love that she's there to flesh out their new school! The show is kind of starved for civilian characters atm asfhasjklsaj
